Do's and Dont's of Sea KayakingAs with any other outdoor recreational activity, kayakers are guided by various unwritten rules. Some of these guidelines follow below:
/ Never set off on a kayak trip without getting a long-term weather forecast for the area.
/ If you are not a 100 per cent proficient paddler, hire a guide or rather join an organised kayaking trip.
/ Always wear a PFD (personal flotation device) and a helmet is a prerequisite in shallow or rocky water.
/ Know your distress signals (and make sure that all your fellow paddlers know them as well).
/ Do not attempt to set off in a craft that handles beyond your paddling ability or experience.
/ Be sure to carry the required emergency equipment, including a medical kit and signal flares.
/ Learn the basics of navigation at sea before you set off - pack a compass and the necessary maps.
/ Protection from the elements (sunburn, hyperthermia and hypothermia) is absolutely essential.
/ Pack your kit (including dry clothes) in a watertight container (such as a dry-bag) which will float.
/ Respect the environment as well as your fellow outdoor enthusiasts. |
